first time commissioning someone, still kinda nervous about it.

hey everyone, i just commissioned someone for the first time and they seem super cool and have been great to work with so far! i have no reason to think they are scamming me (they sent me a link to check updates and had no bewares plus a pretty decent amount of previous work displayed) im just a paranoid person. i know no 2 artists work at the same pace but how long should i expect for the first update? im also not great with asking people about this kinda stuff so how do i politely ask when i should expect an update or the commission to be finished? they have been super good with communication and i know i shouldn’t worry, its totally a personal problem and not them at all, in fact i don’t care if they take a while on it i just haven’t don’t this before and i can’t help but be a little anxious lol.
